This is one of the first questions we hear when we tell people about our adoption plans. It is understandable. We never used to think about Ethiopia either.
The answer is really pretty simple. Each country has its own rules on who can & cannot adopt their children internationally. We only qualified for two countries: Ethiopia & Korea. Ethiopian orphans are in worse conditions. It is also much less expensive to adopt from Ethiopia. This made our decision very easy.
Did you know there are about 5 million orphans in Ethiopia, a country just twice the size of Texas? We didn't either.
However, there are about 132 million orphans worldwide, so THERE IS A GREAT NEED, not just in Ethiopia. If you feel God tugging your heart to help them, there are many ways & many countries. Allow Him to lead you to do what is right for you. We really believe God is at work in a powerful way right now through the body of Christ - will you be a part of His movement to care for orphans?
If you want to adopt internationally, please consider Adoption Advocates International. It is has extremely high ethical standards, which is obviously important in international adoption to prevent child trafficking. They also have many opportunities for sponsoring orphans and helping orphans in other ways.
