Good as Gold

Scout is better with the boys than I ever could have hoped for.  Truly, the perfect Family Dog for two rambunctious little boys.

We really wanted a therapy dog for Liam, but learned they are very expensive and there is typically a lengthy wait to get one (maybe one day).

So we "settled" for a good ole Golden Retriever mix from a local rescue and couldn't be happier with him.  Liam has really blossomed this summer and we can't help but think Scout has something to do with it.

There is just something powerful about the human-animal connection.  Watch and see how good this dog is!

Shep the Chef

I put a bunch of ingredients in a muffin tin and let Shep concoct his own culinary creation (outside of course!).  Cinnamon, flour, salt, jello, sour cream, oats, sprinkles, etc.  I did not intend for him to eat it, but he couldn't resist - and actually said it was TASTY!

A Day In the Life

6:47 a.m. Wake up.  Billy is at work.  Reluctantly roll out of bed to sneak in some time with God before the boys are under-foot.  I can hear that Liam is already awake in the room next door, but he is happy to flip through board books and babble in his crib for awhile (a blessing for this not-morning person).

7:05 Put breakfast cookies on plates for the boys and fix drinks, lay out vitamins, take care of dog, etc.

7:10 Shep comes downstairs.  He and Liam shared a room until Shep decided to start sleeping upstairs in the play/guest/catch-all room upstairs.  This started about a week ago.  We must pick our battles. I greet Shep with the camera & go get Liam from his crib.

7:15 Boys are eating breakfast.  I put Liam's hearing aids in and sit down with the boys until...

7:20 Liam's Speech Therapist arrives and I update her on recent developments with Liam's speech and hearing.  Then Shep, Scout the Dog, and I go into the boys' room to play.  Liam has a really hard time focusing on therapy when there are distractions around so the rest of us always go in another room during Liam's 3-5 therapy sessions each week.  I consider that my quality time with Shep.

7:30-8:30 Shep and I have fun putting diapers on stuffed animals, murdering the poor stuffed animals with our toy sharks (thank you, National Geographic), having a pretend picnic, "camping," playing hide-and-seek with a stuffed turtle, etc.

8:30 Therapy is over.  Therapist tells me what to work on this week with Liam.

8:47 I haven't eaten yet and it hits me that I'm hungry.  Look in the fridge and decide a sandwich sounds good.  Shep spills a bag of trail mix on the floor and I tell him to pick it up.  I sit down at the table to eat  my sandwich.  Liam sits with me and eats grapes.  Shep joins us to eat the trail mix he just picked off the floor.  Oh well.

9:00 I clear the table and take this opportunity while the boys are fed and seemingly happy to hop in the shower. It feels so peaceful in there, I never want to leave (but I do).

9:15 Headache.  I fix coffee and wonder, "why am I just now getting around to this???"  All clean with coffee in hand, I feel much better.  I sit down at the laptop and start this blog post before I forget everything that's happened so far today.  I am interrupted several times by Shep getting into something he shouldn't be then getting mad at me for taking it away, the dog racing around like a madman and knocking the boys down (which makes them cry), etc.

9:35  I'm done (in more ways than one) and begin to get us all dressed and ready for the day.

10:30 Drop the boys off with my sister-in-law because I have to go to my weekly supervision session (a requirement of my Master's program).

11:00-12:00 Supervision

12:30 Arrive to pick up the boys and catch up with my sister-in-law.  They boys are fed and ready for nap time.  Thank you, Jenn!

1:30 We get home, Liam gets a clean diaper, Shep goes potty, etc.  I put the boys in their rooms for naptime.  I had a draining supervision session, so I skip our usual book/song/prayer routine.

2:00 I have finished my leftover spaghetti lunch, checked email, I lie down on the couch to rest and play on the computer.

3:30 Billy surprises me by coming home early (he usually gets home at 5:30-6)!  This never happens, and I think there could not be a better day for it (I am not having a great day).  We lie on couches side-by-side and Shep comes downstairs.  We quickly become his jungle gyms.

4:15 Liam is awake and joins us, cuddling with Daddy on the couch.

5:00 Billy & I are both so wiped out from our interrupted sleep last night and wish we could take a nap.  We let the boys watch a Barney episode so we can continue on in our laziness.  I take a picture of the TV and notice that there is a line on the TV in the picture, but not in real life - weird. Shep sits on me while he watches (as close as he gets to cuddling these days), Billy sneaks off to our room for a catnap, and Liam is eating the remote.

5:30 I fix dinner: salad and leftover spaghetti.  Billy joins me and we load/re-load dishwasher.

6:00  I call everyone in and we sit down to dinner.  I tell Billy I'm doing a Day In the Life post and he asks if this is such a good day to do one, we aren't having the best day after all.  I tell him I've gotten this far, I'm not giving up now.

6:30 I clear the table while Billy bathes the boys.

7:00 Billy puts the boys to bed (early since Shep didn't nap) while I have a Skype counseling session with a client from my internship.

8:00 My session is over.  I get ready for bed, then join Billy in the living room where he is watching a sports documentary, and I play on the computer.

9:30 Our day has come to an end.  Thank you for joining us and to all a goodnight!

Bandana Bibs to the Rescue

We just got these super cute new bibs for Liam - Bandana Bibs!

He has a lot of drooling due to low muscle tone in and around his mouth, so we go through several bibs a day, even at 2.5 years old. These adorable bibs from this Etsy shop have a more mature look about them than the traditional baby bib, so they are the perfect solution.

Doesn't he look so stylish?!

In Search of a Dolphin Brother

Shep's imagination is developing and it is so cute to hear the things he comes up with.

Here is a video of him telling about how he wants give Liam to a Mama Whale and then we can catch a baby dolphin to be his new brother.  Don't worry - my eyes were glued to the road, not the camera!

First Fish!

Hanging out with our sweet friends, Mr. David & Ms. Cindy at their lake house (Ms. Cindy married Billy & me 5 years ago!).  This was Shep's first time fishing and he actually caught a fish right out off the bat - he was so proud.

Liam Speaks!

Liam's first word was "Hi!" (right around 2 years old)

His second word has just arrived (at 2.5) - watch the video to hear his sweet voice!

Although his milestones come painfully slow, they are all the more amazing to us when they do finally come.

We are learning to wait - and here's the kicker - to be OK with it.  Waiting we have no choice about, but waiting patiently is up to us.
