Liam's Gift (and My Weakness)

I read a profound sentence in a beautiful blog post today.  It said this about people with intellectual disabilities: "They have the gift for relationships."

It hit me hard.  In the gut.  This is Liam's gift.  And I take it for granted.

Liam loves nothing more than to be with us.  To be held.  To laugh.  To give open-mouthed, drooly kisses (always in multiples, like a sneeze).  He has "the gift for relationships."

We are programmed to assume we are "gifted" and those with disabilities are not.

But I have to stop myself when I consider this one gift.  Because it is something I have striven for my whole life and don't know that I will ever attain.

Did Jesus not tell us the greatest commandment is to love God and the second is to love each other?  How good am I at obeying these commandments?  Not very.  Most days I am rushing through, checking tasks off my list, getting things done.

But what is more important?  God.  People.  That is it.  So simple, yet so hard.

And all the while, Liam has it down-pat.  At age 2, he is a Master Lover of Souls.  And after all my years and all my schooling and all my "superior" intellect, it is blatantly obvious: I have something to learn from this little Master.

And I realize more today than ever: there is a reason God put Liam in my life.  Yes, we are a blessing to him, but, perhaps even more, he is a blessing to us.  He is opening my eyes to so many things about life, about God, about my own sinful nature.

Lord, help me see things the way he does.  To slow down.  To love with all my heart and with all my soul and with all my mind and with all my strength.  Amen.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31).

"There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:42).

New Ears for Liam!

Liam got hearing aids last week and so far, so good.  He is keeping them on - many kids pull them off.  He goes for a hearing test next week to find out how they are working for him.  Please join us in praying his hearing is now normal and he can begin to learn language now!

Remember Those In Prison

Here is a video that will give you a peak into what I have been up to this Summer - counseling women in our local jail, work-release prison, and women who are currently transitioning back into society.  It has been an incredible experience working with these women.  The prison population is not one I am familiar with.  To be honest, I had a lot of stereotypes.  But God is working on my heart, as well as the hearts of these women through our time together.

"Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies" (Hebrews 13:3, NLT).
