Christmas 2011 in Pictures

I finally got a picture with all THREE of my nieces together - aren't they beautiful?
The boys wrestled, of course
The Little Ones each got a Rody
Thank you for the Rody's, Honey & Pop!
Maevy got a tutu - a nice addition to the strawberry bum
Shep lost his pants somewhere in the mayhem
Santa came on Christmas morning
The boys' big gift was a train table
Liam got some cool Ethiopian instruments - trying to keep him in touch with his roots
Shep ADORES the train table
Liam loved the groan tube
Had to try out his new paints
Visited family in TN, stayed at a chalet in the mountains
Thank you for the easel, Gramma!

New Year's Resolution 2011 - Looking Back

Looking back over the last year, I am really glad I chose the Resolution I did.  I resolved not to buy any new clothes for one year.  Thrift stores and consignment sales only.  And that is what I did.

Except for one weak-willed afternoon when I went to the mall while Billy was in Ethiopia picking up Liam.  Come on, that was a really emotional week!  I can honestly tell you I forgot about my resolution that week (obviously, I had other things on my mind) and was focusing on finding a cute dress to wear to the airport (to take my mind off why I was going to the airport)!  I also bought a few things for the boys over the summer at Walmart - not much, just a few things they couldn't go without until Fall consignment sales came around.  Other than that, I only bought used clothes.

The verdict?  So worth it.  And, actually, not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.  I fell in love with Goodwill all over again.  Found some of the cutest clothes there, which I wear nearly every day and get a lot of compliments on.  So, I'm thinking I'll stick with mostly consignment shopping.  You can't beat a good deal.

Liam's Physical Therapy

Here is Liam enjoying his weekly Physical Therapy session with Maria.  We are so excited to see him getting stronger and more able to walk with hand support, pull up & cruise on furniture, crawl up a whole flight of stairs, and have better balance.

Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy are wonderful, too, but Physical Therapy has made the biggest difference so far.  His Occupational Therapist, Alycia, explained that it is typical to see gains in gross motor first, then fine motor, then speech because the body cannot concentrate on all 3 areas at the same time.

That makes since so we are thankful to see him making strides in gross motor right now and hopeful that we will one day see big gains in all three areas.

2011: A Family Photobook

My plan is to try to make a family photobook every year or two while the kids are little.

There are so many cute and precious moments scattered throughout these long days of diaper changes, tantrums, runny noses, and wrestling matches-turned-brawls.

I know this season of life will be behind us before we know it so I want to capture it in all its glory while it's still here.  Enjoy!

Fun in the Sandbox

In this house, we have two small porches.  When we moved in, I decided to put our sandbox on the little porch off of the living room.

It seemed like an odd place for a sandbox at the time, mostly because it takes up about half the porch space, but I am really glad it's there now.

Why?  When I don't want the boys in it (i.e. I don't want to clean up the mess afterward), I just take them out to the backyard to play because they can't see the sandbox porch from the backyard.  We just go out to the sandbox porch when Mama's idea because, let's face it, when a boy doesn't see something, he forgets it's there (sort of like how Billy never knows where anything is in the kitchen).  Brilliant.

Hearing Loss/Hearing Aids

So happy - he has no idea what's coming!
In the waiting room (thank you for being there, Mom!)
Post-surgery, SLOWLY coming out of anesthesia
Hanging out waiting for Liam to wake up

So, we are in the process now of considering hearing aids.  We had no idea there was so much debate about this, but apparently there is.  Our pediatrician, audiologist, early intervention coordinator, and ENT are all giving different opinions.  Oh my.

To be honest, hearing aids would have been a big deal to me a year ago.  Now, after all the medical issues and delays we have experienced with Liam, they sound like good news because it means he could learn to talk.  He will be two in January and has yet to say a word or even babble.  So bring on the hearing aids!  And thank God for the gift of medical interventions!

Holiday Shepisms

Note:  These are not an attempt at preschool humor - Shep is being perfectly serious when he says these things.

Happy Thanksgiving! = Happy Thankspumpkin!

Feliz Navidad = Feliz Lollipop

Feliz Lollipop to all and to all a good night!

Just One Year Ago...

We were meeting you for the first time...

You were so unsure of us...
We were just strangers to you...
You were so different...

Now you are stronger...
You know us so well...
You know how to play...
You are able to do so many things...
You can be silly...
You are so joyful (yes, mouthful of marshmallows)...
You can feed yourself...
You are LOVED....
